Mike Gorman getting chalked etc.

Red lit up on the bench as a deliberate way to say "The game is
over. We win." Back then, several players, including Tommy
Heinsohn, smoked; and smoking wasn't the target of so much public
outrage back in the day.

As to the language, it's probably not so much a thing with the older
Celtics players--Red cursed a lot and so did Cousy, to name two
people. That we didn't hear it so much on tv is more a fact that the
FCC frowns on such things, than that they didn't use foul
language. From what I've seen/heard/read about Garnett, it's not a
simple matter of him saying, "Get your lazy ass up the court!", but
apparently something distinctly more vulgar. Given that Ray Allen
grew up a military brat, I'm sure he heard worse growing up, so
whatever Garnett said must have been a doozy.

COULD Red be childish and offensive? Hell, yes. But everyone KNEW
that going in. And frankly, he ran the team, did the scut work,
coached the Celtics to multiple championships, and secured players
who became legends of the game. I think he earned the right to do a
few things his way. Good as he undeniably is, Garnett doesn't yet
have that cachet.
