Many lesser players than Pierce have had their number retired by the 
Celtics, so I don't see  how they wouldn't retire his, whether he wins a 
championship or not. In general, the championships-won criterion is 
pretty much bull, unless the player was directly, personally responsible 
for winning (or not winning) those championships.
The same goes for HOF, but with politics, personality, and timing 
playing an even bigger role.
