Dulling our point

Ryan,

I gotta say it.  I've been with you on most of your comments, especially
on Delonte, where it was me and you against the wind, tide, typhoons,
you name it.  But on this one I gotta cut the ties... maybe forever
(just kidding).  If he's not ready to play, he won't be playing any
point, and dribbling the ball off his foot like only he knows how.  His
awkward left-right dribbling into a drive will only serve him if he can
physically play his own position.  I think I know what you mean.  Maybe
he can play himself into shape at the point.  But he's really bad at the
point.  This team has come a long way from the days where you could try
everybody everywhere sometime or other and have Tommy just love the way
they did it.  This is serious now.

The question with Tony at the point isn't how he'll
play the point.  If you go look at the tape when Tony
was playing point (which was the end of the season in
which he was coming off his first knee surgery), he
played it adequately at a time when he still wasn't
100 percent.  On this team, behind Rondo and Ray
Allen, Tony's a great option at the PG in certain
situations.  The real question is what shifting
between PG and SG will do to Tony as a shooting guard.
 As we saw with Delonte, switching back and forth
between the point and the SG is hard to do for young
players.  I would be adverse to playing Tony at point
not because he couldn't do it but because of how it
might affect his ability as a slashing SG.  And, if he
can come back fully from his latest injury, I think he
was a helluva a shooting guard.

On the other hand, if Tony can't come back fully from
this latest injury, he will NEED in some instances to
play the point, especially as his career continues. 
And if this season is a season where he's still
recovering while playing some, then the point might be
exactly where he's best suited.
