The bench

Mutombo would be a good signing. He can play a little D in short
minutes.

I like House as a shooter off the bench, but not as any sort of PG
insurance. If Rondo falters, House isn't bailing you out. The best thing
he brings is crunch-time free throw shooting -- something Rondo would
struggle with.

They won't play at the same time unless it's a blowout. That's the
luxury the Celtics will - keeping at least one of the three stars out on

the floor at all times while the game is still in question. I think the
team would do fine in the regular season even with this cast (barring
injuries, of course); it's in the playoffs when the quality of your 4th
through 8th players is going to matter a great deal.

The way I look at it, the stars will average about 105-110 minutes a
game combined. I hope it would be less than 105 or 35 per, the way the
Spurs manage it, but probably will be closer to 110-115 (their mpgs from

last season total 116). Perk and Rondo will play probably 25-30 mpg or
so each. That leaves us with about 80 player-minutes to fill per game,
divided among 3-5 players, and including some missed games by the
starters and games with OT.

Currently, Tony Allen would be the 6th man, probably averaging about
20-25 mpg (if he's health again). Scal may get 15, House probably around

15, a backup center to be signed would play 15-20 and one of Powe,
Davis et al. may or may not fill the remaining 10-15 minutes depending
on how competitive the game is, injuries to key players and their own
development.

Btw, House seems like possibly a good fit at backup PG - a still-young
veteran with some playoff experience, a guy that can shoot from
distance, make free throws (92% last season) and take care of the ball (

0.48 TPG in 17 MPG last season). Hopefully, Ainge can sign another vet,

a true-PG type, to solidify the position further.

What do you people think of the potential Mutombo signing? Is he too old

to contribute much? Or could he still give the Celtics solid D for 10-15

minutes?
