That the Celtics matter again is incontrovertible; the question is
whether they are championship contender.
My take on Ryan's piece is this: he has a point, but he overstates it
and beats it to death, just to be different and provocative (the final
sentence, "They might even make the playoffs.", should alert you to the
fact that he's yanking our chain). While he's right that the rest of the
Celticdom is too optimistic, I think he's too pessimistic, without hard
proof. He's treating NBA teams as sums of individual talent, overlooking
the fact that what matters is not just the overall level of talent on
the team per se, but how it meshes. And at this point, we just don't
know how it will all mesh,. However, there is some reason for optimism.
The presence of KG (and, to a lesser extent, Allen) changes not just the
talent level on the team, but also the mental makeup of the team,
extracting the most of the other players. KG won't allow it to be any
other way. Allen and Pierce it should be more efficient than they have
ever been. Rondo and Perk may well be adequate starters because they're
playing with KG, Allen, and Pierce. Some of the others may find and fill
their roles well, which makes them better players. Of course, it all has
to work out for the Celtics to be viable contenders, but it's the case
for any team.
