A surprised convert

C. S. Lewis wrote a great little book, "Surprised by Joy." Since I was part of the "trade anyone but Al" group, I find it curious that I am so upbeat about the trade. Overpaying for Garnett is not a problem with me; it's like buying into Apple now--pricey but worth it. Losing Al will be painful for a long time, but it's not like losing Joe Johnson--for basically nothing. With Al, we would have contended from the underside, being a surprise team in the East. It would have taken a few years, most likely since we would have needed the bench to grow up fast. With Garnett, we're there. We have the confidence of being a contender for a title from the start. And we have the pieces of eight, well, we have about that many of the pieces in place even if several of them are rookies. Remember that Davis and Wallace are (three or) four year players and know the game; they will contribute at a high level for rookies. Our only glaring need is a consistent pg backup.

What Garnett brings that has calmed my fears: defense, power, height, attitude, and it goes on and on. We have added two great players who will make few mistakes over an entire game. The mistakes made by Al and Green et al have been crippling. Now, with Rondo's careful handling of the ball, we should be a low turnover team with great decision makers in the key spots. I think it will rub off on Paul. So, I'm in. I will still feel like my son just went off to the far country, but I can't deny that this is an opportunity that has great chances of great success. Come November! Gene
