Draft question

Frederick,
While I agree with your point about Garnett being the face of the franchise
and the Timberwolves not wanting to trade him because of that, the issue is
complicated by the fact that he can opt out of the remaning year of his deal
after next season. Will he, at 31 years old, decide to opt out and go to a
team that is competing for a championship leaving Minnesota with nothing in
return? Can the Timberwolves take that risk given the fact that
ownership/management threw away so many first round picks in the Joe Smith
signing fiasco? Or will they decide to deal with the short term negative PR
issues and trade him for a combination of emerging prospects and draft picks
realizing it might be best to start over despite losing the franchise's best
all time player.
Of course, should the Wolves end up with Durant or Oden, Garnett is more
likely to finish his career a Timberwolf. Should the Wolves end up with
neither AND Garnett be traded for a mix of young players and picks, the 2008
Minnesota first round pick acquired by the Celtics in the Davis/Sczcerbiak
deal looks much, much better.
In any event, it should be an eventful offseason for the lottery teams that
have star players approaching the back nine of their respective careers.
