games of chance and other goofy things to do with ping pong balls

Over on www.ESPN.com they have this electronic version of the NBA
Draft Lottery, which may or may not be as weighted by choice as the
real one. But for fun, I played it 14 consecutive, once for each of
the first 14 picks.
Boston got either the 1 or 2 pick only 5 out of 14 times, and most
often, the 2 pick.
After all the caterwauling I've endured about people hoping for
losses to get this, the real thing had damn well BETTER be more
weighed for Boston than THAT.
Danny Ainge confirmed that Tommy Heinsohn will indeed represent the
C's at the draft dog and pony show.
Speaking of dog and pony shows, over on the CBW, I wrote up a tribute
to the 50th anniversary championship team, and worried that it wasn't
sufficient to honor the builders of the Celtics Dynasty. Then I saw
the game and realized I'd put a LOT more time and effort into what I
did, than what the current C's organization did. We know there's
more emphasis placed on entertainment than basketball, hence the
continued presence (much to my dismay) of the "Moosiers" dancers.
But to make legends of not only the Celtics but NBA Hall of Famers
have to stand aside and wait for their "presentation" to be
sandwiched in between a Frisbee catching dog and halftime warmups,
bespeaks of a lack of respect for which Celtics ownership owes those
men a public apology. Then another such apology to the fans. I say,
bring the gentlemen back--assuming they are willing and able to come
after the last public humiliation--and do it RIGHT, with a full
halfttime ceremony devoted to their historical accomplishment.
It looks more and more like Tom Heinsohn is being delegated the "in
place of Red" duties, having presented Big Al Jefferson with the
second annual Red Auerbach award the other night.
People have asked me what I thought of Doc Rivers as Celtics
Coach. My answer inevitably centers around what a nice guy he is. I
realized it reminded me of KC Jones, who was ALSO a nice guy as
coach--but this team is no longer a bunch of kiddies needing a gentle
hand guiding them into NBA life, just as the team Jones coached no
longer needed his gentle approach. The current team needs someone to
drop kick their collective asses into high gear on a daily basis. I
wonder what Bill Fitch is doing these days? :)
As far as giving Doc an extension, I initially felt the "Isiah Thomas
Rule" should apply--if the Knicks' miserable excuse for a coaching
catastrophe got a contract extension, EVERY NBA COACH should
automatically get one, too. But then I remembered that old saw that
parents invariably use at one time or another--"and if they all
jumped off a cliff, would you jump too?"
Nah.
Though I *did* once jump off a waterfall, so what do *I* know?
