I can't even imagine how much FUN that would be! Seriously! The NBDL-DL!
Moe the sous-chef! Alan the janitor! Tonight on The NBA on ESPN! Commentary
by the CSB Fancaster of the Week!
Kestas and I throw the little digs at each other on this, and I CAN see the
absurd nature of the lengths teams will go to for perceived satisfaction,
but since it already happens NOW it makes no difference if the draft were
based on record versus a lottery system because they still view it as a
guarantee by their actions even though it isn't based on pure record! When
you already play a Kevinn Pinckney 25 minutes there isn't a lower absurdity
standard to drop to so what's the difference?
It's no different from baseball where Tampa Bay plays its Triple-A players
after about the third week in April or Miami playing Mr. Lemon at QB the
last seven games of the season last year. Once any team is out of contention
they play their projects, their future, whatever the Hell they want to call
the scrubs, and limit their actual players.
And the "punishment" for such tactics is if those teams then do not
capitalize on the opportunities from high draft position, strengthen
themselves further with shrewd free agent pickups, and the hiring and
keeping quality coaching staff because it only takes about one or two years
of performing this tactic of "tanking" before the fans totally turn off the
franchise and attendance numbers top out at about 6,000. (Hello Boston
Bruins!) Fans can see when a franchise is nothing more then a tax break for
a wealthy owner and they respond in kind.
The fact is, many in the media, fandom, whatever also have a belief that the
Celtics are almost guaranteed the first or second pick, when the odds
dictate they're more likely to get #3 or #4. In the past ten years the 1st
pick has gone to the team with the worst record ONCE. The first pick has
gone to the team with the second worst record ONCE. The team with the worst
record is actually MOST likely, in the past ten years, to get the 2nd pick.
So doing the math the Celtics will, if probability holds true, be picking
3rd or 4th - and all the stored fan goodwill that has somehow clung to this
team all year will be gone in an instant.

They'd have to sign up the janitors in the building to play the game, or
those people who get a chance to shoot a
free throw sponsored by some casino and don't come within 5 feet of the
hoop. - Kestas
