Nik Caner-Medley was not one of the 60 players chosen in the NBA draft
Wednesday night. The former Deering High and University of Maryland star now hopes
to sign as a free agent.
Caner-Medley kept his ear to a telephone and his eyes on the television as
the draft continued for more than four hours, ending around midnight.
Surrounded by some 70 friends and family at a home in the Portland area,
Caner-Medley watched and waited. He had said he didn't expect to hear his name
called in the second round but also was prepared for a surprise.
Caner-Medley worked out for about eight teams in the past few weeks, most
recently the Dallas Mavericks and the Boston Celtics.
He is scheduled to be on a conference call this morning set up by his agent,
Mark Bartel- stein.
Caner-Medley led Deering High to the Class A state championship game before
leaving for a four-year career at the University of Maryland.
Caner-Medley started his freshman season for Coach Gary Williams. He led the
Terps in scoring the past two seasons.
