It has been confirmed that the Portland Trail Blazers have traded point
guard Sebastian Telfair to the Boston Celtics for the #7 pick in tonight's draft,
plus one or two other players - likely Dan Dickau. EDIT Just got
confirmation it is Dickau. Speculation also has Raef LaFrentz going from Boston to
Portland and Theo Ratliff from Portland to Boston.
The trade was sent to the league office after the 2pm deadline, so Boston is
still the team officially at 7, but they will be making the pick for
Portland.
As for the fallout - things could get very interesting for the Portland
Trail Blazers. They have their eyes on four players, reportedly: LaMarcus
Aldridge, Tyrus Thomas, Adam Morrison, and Brandon Roy. For them to do this trade
they must feel one of those players will still be available at seven in order
to give up on Telfair. Rudy Gay - not an ideal choice - could also be in the
mix at well.
It should be noted that if Portland chooses Brandon Roy at #4, the rumored
deal between Houston and Atlanta (where the Hawks take Roy at 5 and trade him
to Houston at 8, who would pick Shelden Williams, and Luther Head obviously
cannot happen.
Another possibility that hasn't really been discussed is Portland then
taking the 4 and 7 picks and trading them to Toronto for #1. It's very likely the
Raptors could still get Andrea Bargnani at 4, the player they really want, so
they might bite.
For Boston, the Celtics now have a point guard they feel can help them now.
It also means all the Allen Iverson can be put on hold, at least until July.
Also: The Memphis Grizzlies have fallen head over heels for Florida State's
Alexander Johnson and are committed to taking him with the 24th pick in the
draft.
