Another reason for trading Pierce

In the end it really all comes down to talent evaluation, player development, and prognostication(quija board). Could you get there with Pierce and the current group? Who knows, but if there is a good chance he won't re-sign, which I think is likely, it makes sense to move forward.
Did anyone expect Chauncy Billups and a few others some list members wanted nothing to do with, to take Detroit to a championship?
I think Gordon isn't that big of a drop off from Pierce and if we can pick up 2 more picks and get an athletic big man(have we ever had one?) and a real point or perimeter player, you have to make the move. If we don't the Lakers or others definitely will
If we landed Gordon, 2 of Thomas , Morrison, Roy, either Williams with 2 & 7, and got Sergio Rodriquez, Rondo, Redick, or Carney at 16, I think that would be a successful draft. Yeah, they could all be flops, but they could be the start of a great young nucleus or lead to a trade that brings us a big name veteran.
Remembering we passed on guys like Tony Parker, and watched Dallas snatch Nowitski from us.

But will someone like Deng and two more draftees (or any other players
we trade Pierce for) take us there?
