The lower the projection, the longer the dance card.
Such is the routine of Jose Juan Barea, the Northeastern point guard who
jumped into the pit with UConn's Marcus Williams, Michigan State's Shannon Brown
and Rutgers' Quincy Douby yesterday as the Celtics' brain trust looked on at
HealthPoint.
The Celtics marked Barea's sixth single-team workout, following visits with
Sacramento, the Lakers, Golden State, Toronto and Minnesota.
His current projection?
"Late first to early second," said Barea, who impressed Celtics coach Doc
Rivers with his general basketball intelligence.
"He's crafty," Rivers said. "I really enjoyed watching him. Right now he's a
lot more used to playing with the ball in his hands than moving without it,
though."
Win sprints
Brown, a physical specimen who went to Rivers' high school alma mater
(Chicago's Proviso East), dominated in yesterday's three- minute sprint drill,
completing 27 laps before the whistle blew. Williams, with a late push, completed
26 laps, ahead of Barea (24 3/ 4) and Douby, who was significantly behind.
The Celtics' record-holder is Delonte West, who completed 29 laps during his
pre-draft visit two years ago.
Familiar faces
Gerald Green popped in and ran through a shooting drill once the draft
audition ended. Kendrick Perkins also checked in for some Stairmaster work before
heading off for his favorite room in the building - the weight room.
Al Jefferson and Dan Dickau have been in residence all week - the former
already with a noticeable improvement in his physique.. ..
The Celtics will turn their attention to big man candidates next week, with
some intriguing ones lined up, including Patrick O'Bryant - a fast rising
7-footer from Bradley - and Saer Sene, a 7-footer from Senegal. Duke's Shelden
Williams and North Carolina State's Cedric Simmons are also due in.
