Biggest need - PG? Biggest need - big man?
How about winning as the biggest need for this team?
Seriously though, I'm in the "BPA" camp of drafting regardless of sport. If
you give up drafting a player you think might be a better player just
because you need "X" what exactly do you gain? Talent is ALWAYS marketable
at ANY position. You gain competition, you gain depth, just to name a couple
things that are in your favor. Last two times we drafted the "falling"
talented player regardless of need (Pierce and Green - and we needed a PG
and big man those years too) I think we got the great deal.
As far as Orien and Kandiman go...
Orien needs touch. That's why he blows so many bunnies because he's not
"soft" around the bucket. Touch can't be taught unfortunately. Repetition
may mitigate it somewhat, but from my experience it's like stone hands
(Hellllloooo Mark Blount) once you have em, you ALWAYS have them.
That being said I still think Orien can be a quality backup in the league
for a long time...heck, Milt Palacio is still around the league and he never
had touch either, and frankly Orien is a better passer and defender then
Uncle Milty. However, I'm a typical fan..meaning I'm fickle...if guys can
leave for lack of respect...errr..I mean money...then I can kick em to the
curb if something better comes along. So, if we can get a more experienced,
better backup PG then sorry Orien...but if we can't I'm okay with him
staying.
Kandiman, however...you are what you are...a lazy, unrealized talent who
will never live up to his potential no matter how many new environments he's
placed in. If it means Jones is the last big man off the bench when
fouls/injuries plague options 1-4 I'm okay with that. Jones is already a
good rebounder and learning shot blocker. If we're that deep into the bench
(hell, if we're at option 4, Scalabrine, we already stink) what's the
difference anyway - we're in trouble regardless. Might as well have the kid
who's shown ability to work on getting better versus the vet who's proven
just the opposite.
