Public relations...
How horrible our Celtics have been in this regard. Since there's nothing
going on with the green this time of year I thought I'd jump in on this not
so discussed topic.
I've always wondered how hard it would be to generate "buzz". Obviously,
negative press seems the easiest method, but doesn't usually have the same
return in receipts. Positive buss is much harder, especially in a town so
consumed with the Red Sox and lately the Patriots.
However, I realized that just the very idea of bringing in Allen Iverson
generated the most talk I've heard about the C's in a looooong time.
Is that all it takes - a POTENTIAL trade for a superstar to generate so much
quick interest? Is that the "quick fix"? I also wonder if GMs can wear out
their welcome with such tactics? Why wouldn't you, at such slow times of the
year, float blockbuster trades (I mean it's not lying if you do propose it
and you just don't have to pull the trigger backing out at the last minute
when they won't throw in that extra 1st rounder).
GMs MUST do this all the time...and if they don't shame on them. It is
mutually beneficial as both teams get the little "kick" of excitement
generated.
Am I way out to lunch here?
