TRAVERSE CITY - It wasn't the average staid museum patron who viewed the debut of rock 'n' roll chronicler Tom Wright's photography Thursday.
It wasn't an average exhibit either.
Black ruled at the Dennos Museum Center - in leather, in fishnet stockings and in Wright's black and white photos of Pete Townshend and Rod Stewart.
"This has been the hottest ticket in town," said Eugene Jenneman, museum director. "We sure wish this would happen more often."
Wright agreed weeks ago to display a few of the intimate moments he's snapped backstage and on the road during his 40-year career.
Rumors flew.
Would Wright's friend and frequent muse Townshend attend? Would Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh show up for the jam session afterwards?
Sadly, no.
Those who snagged one of the several hundred VIP passes or $20 tickets to the debut settled for life-size photos of Townshend and a video message from Walsh.
Still, the sold-out crowd was awed by the unassuming Wright and his honest photos. Kevin Kelly of Traverse City was reminded of the concerts at Detroit's Grande Ballroom, which Wright managed.
"It was the Grande and nothing else," Kelly said. "It's easier to say who did not play there."
Wright, now of Bellaire, said Traverse City was the perfect place for the debut. The public's reaction and the support of the musicians he photographed has been "surreal," he said.
Those who missed the debut of "Knew and Used Photographs" can come back through the end of January.
