Q&A with Chicks on Speed.

New Music: Chicks on Speed
Alex, Melissa (centre) and Kiki don't want to learn how to play guitar
Electropop trio Chicks on Speed met at a Munich college and started the band as an art project.
They have gone overground with the single We Don't Play Guitars from new album 99 Cents.
Member Melissa Logan introduces the band to BBC News Online.

Describe your music in three words.
Loud, quietly booming.
Who is in your line-up?
It's me from New York, Kiki Moorse from Munich and Alex Murray-Leslie from Bowral, Australia. We're based in Berlin.
Who are you usually compared to in reviews?
Kleenex and The Slits combined with electro.
What has been your biggest mistake?
Oh god, we make mistakes all the time. The trick is to turn it around so it's good in the end.
On your single you declare: "We don't play guitars." Why not?
We were all forced to play instruments at school, and didn't find the process very creative. But we're not anti-guitar.
Who is your guitar hero?
Jimi Hendrix remains the king but Pete Townshend is the best overall poser.
If anyone learned to play guitar, would they be kicked out of the band?
Definitely.
When did you write your first song?
On a train from Munich to Hamburg. We all had ideas but had to learn how to write together.
What's your favourite line from one of your songs?
"Sometimes they think I'm vermin because my parents look German. I've got more faces than Cindy Sherman." (from Yes I Do!)
What are your three favourite albums of all time?
I'd go for ESG - A South Bronx Story, Kiki would choose something by The Human League and Alex would go for The Magic Sound of Fenn O'Berg by Fennesz, O'Rourke and Rehberg.
Which artists would you have on the bill if you organised a festival?
Angie Reed, Le Tigre and other Chicks on Speed Records artists. Our friend Peaches, plus Joni Mitchell - she's been complaining that the record business is a cesspool so we'd give her a break.
Which celebrity do you want to be your No 1 fan?
Uma Thurman.
What is your biggest musical ambition?
The advancement of culture - we want to go off in new directions.
Is electropop about to conquer the world?
I hope so. That would be nice.
Do you have a message for your fans?
Don't do it yourself, do it with everybody else.
