Pick of the day
by Phil Daoust
Wednesday May 21, 2003
The Guardian

There's something about Chuck Berry that makes strong
men go weak at the knees. For Stevie Wonder he is the
"one true king of rock'n'roll"; for Keith Richards,
"rhythm supreme". Brian Wilson, weirdo genius of the
Beach Boys, said he wrote "all of the great songs and
came up with all the rock'n'roll beats".
And Roger Daltrey's no exception. The former Who
frontman is presenting a new six-part series profiling
the great guitarist and songwriter ( The Chuck Berry
Story, 10pm, Radio 2). The first programme gives an
overview of Berry's life and career in the 50s; his
lyric-writing, his fusion of white and black music,
and his influence on British artists. It also takes a
brief glance at his career, including his reputation
as a "difficult" man and his love of sex and cars.
There are new interviews from Jimmy Page and Ray
Davies, among others; the archive material includes
Berry himself, John Lennon and Paul McCartney. If
you're more interested in the music than the man,
there are tracks from Berry's classic Chess
recordings: Johnny B Goode, Almost Grown, Sweet Little
16, Back in the USA, School Day, Little Queenie and No
Money Down.

This will be on at 5pm EDT, 2pm PDT. Here's a link to
