Subject: John Entwistle Auction Exhibition: Matt Kent walk through and talk....

. ....did not happen this afternoon, at least with Matt! Steve
Maycock, the Sotheby's roack and roll auction organiser,
stood in for Matt, and gave a short 20 minute talk.

We'll let him off, though, as he let us have a play on Frankenstein,
which was not in the actual exhibition, but was being restrung out back. As
Steve said, it sounds good even when not plugged into an amp, the feel of
the neck, the action, and the acoustic 'ring' are quite superb, easy to see
why John regarded it as his favourite passive bass.

That said, you could play virtually all of the other instruments on open exhibition,
almost at will. The Taylor acoustic bass used a the Bridge Benefits has a nice sound,
some nice Les Pauls, Fender Strats, J-200's, Gretsches, Danelectro, Warwick Thumbs,
fretted and fretless, their Buzzard and the Status ones, if you seen the catalogue, this was the
last opportunity to touch and feel this lot with in the confines of the one room! They were selling
an A4 printed version of the catalogue for the Teenage Cancer Trust charity.

Lots of fibreglass fish mouldings were swinging overhead, mostly near John's collecetion of Brass
instruments, the diver's helmet, and his jewellery/watches.

The Flock of Buzzards is fascinating, his 4 and 8 string basses in trays, a tray marked 'Bits' and
the
Chord charts for Eminence Front and Certified Rose were on top for you to thumb through. Opposite
was the wardrobe case brought back with the Buzzards from Las Vegas. Lots of John's clothes were on
open racks, and available for inspection. The notable thing about his gold and platinum discs was
how often
Decca spelt his name 'Entwhistle', from Tommy on all of them until 'Who Are You', when they finally
dropped the
'h'!

Exhilarating to get so close to this stuff, distinctly depressing to be doing in in these
circumstances;
what it really needed was for John himself to be there doing the walk through, if according to Steve
Maycock, the intention was to sell it all off at some point, but alas, that is not to be.........
