I know rod stewart was originally gonna play the pinball wizard in the 
"tommy" film but elton of all people talked him out of it. (guess who got the 
role in the end)   rod does sing the song on the London symphony orchestra 
album where they do the piece with guest stars (including ringo as "uncle 
ernie"!)    as for the "join together" thing, perhaps that version came from 
a different show than what your bootleg has.  or could I be wrong?
