Deflowered By The Who

Great post, Anna. Interesting & well-written. It reminded me of some-
thing.

I used to think the first Who song *I* was conscious of was "Magic Bus."
When MTV was just starting out in '81-'82 they ran a half-hour Who
special & kept advertising it with "Magic Bus" in the background.

I sorta knew about The Who at that time (I was 14) but wasn't familiar
with any of their songs (KISS still held a powerful sway over me!)

But hearing "Magic Bus" on those MTV adverts made we want to hear more,
so I asked my older brother if he had any Who albums so I could further
explore this new interest. Luckily he had THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT sound-
track. And WHO ARE YOU.

My Who freakness exploded at that point & for the longest time I held
a special place in my heart (how corny!) for "Magic Bus" - the song that
drove me to seek more.

Buuuuuuut........years later I'm listening to some old cassette tapes
that me & my brother recorded on back when I was probably 9 or 10 -
we would do funny skits & silly things just to amuse ourselves.

And on one of these tapes I pretend I'm introducing Elton John at a rock
concert (my brother was/is an Elton John fan). Being around 9 years old
& in complete control of the tape I was making, I decided it wasn't enough
just to imitate the "announcer," I wanted to be Elton John, too!

So sure enough, I start into a little Elton John medley. And I'll be
damned if I didn't sing a few lines from "Pinball Wizard," which to me
at that time was an Elton John song.

I was shocked hearing this like 15 years later. I had no recollection of
it! If I'd only known, I could've started my Who fandom 5 years earlier!

Anyway, all this made me question what Who song I should hold dear, as
the first Who song to reach my consciousness.

My decision: "Magic Bus." There are just too many strong memories of
that Spring/Summer of 1982 when I gave my life over to The Who (under
absolutely no duress, mind you).

And yet something must've struck me at an early age about "Pinball Wizard"
(even if it was Elton John's version). So, that song will hold a special
place, too.

<sigh> I think I'm going to cry. Don't look at me.....

Anyone else have any fond memories of the first Who song that made you
want more? And more? And more? And more?......
