Did you ever read the words to his songs, man? (rhetorical of course) While 
he was comical, it was usually on the down side.  No doubt he was funny and 
loved the road but he complained a lot in most of the interviews that I've ever 
heard him in.  There may have been a *need* to tour all the time. A need to be 
drunk. A need to chase women. Hey, he was a rock star. But then so is Ted 
Nugent who is the epitome of embracing life.

Roger just said that for the last five years he felt like John was about to 
die.  John didn't take care of himself.  And he died way too young.  Was he 
having a good time? I don't think it was all that it seems.
