THX vs. Dolby (Non-Who)

Nothing Who related but I figure many here know what thier talking about (at 
least in my views)

Rented a few DVD's over the weekend and on one there was the THX intro the 
other a Dolby Digital intro.

Not that it really matters but I'm just curious to know the differnces 
between them (If any) and what all the 7.2, 5.1, 3.142857  mean and what 
not.

Perhaps a "what's best for me" scenario.

Any points or shoves in the general direction would be appreciated.
