WHO BANTER TIME! "The Who at Boston" - Mansfield, Massachusetts September 27, 2002

I thought this one was particularly relevant, given recent proclamations by
both Roger and Pete (Make note of what Pete says about John's writings).
It was a great show.
It had an absolutely *fan*tastic pre and post show tailgate party.
And to top it off, I had very close seats, and was able to see the first 2
numbers right at Pete's feet.

But, I digress!
The *BANTER*, as always, is killer!
Enjoy.

[Good cheering and some applauding, that then turns into something resembling
"Boooooooo", but it's actually "Whoooooooooooooooo". Then some louder cheers
erupt, and suddenly a tune-up chord, some picking, one last run through the
strings, and..... ]

>Pete: "So! This is the LAST...Who Show...Eva....IN..... *HISTORY*
!!!!!!!!!!.........[First loud cheering, then, like going "duh", it turned to
loud Booooooo's].........Only kidding, only kidding (heh-heh). Just
*kiddin'*. It's the last show (chuckling)....this is the last Who Show, in
the USA, and we're going to Canada tomorrow, and then that's it for this leg.
It's a cold night. Thank you so much for commin' out...and being with us.
[re-energized cheering] And I, and I, I.......Listen to me, listen to
me.....apparently I'm the only person that can tell you this,....and,..... be
believed...We....*will*..... be.... *BACK*!."

[A very loud, unison, and clearly audible, primal, almost angry "YEAAAAHHHHHH"
(rivaling Roger's WGFA scream) explodes from the crowd (you can almost
visualize the raised fists),and the Crowd goes nuts. Pete launches right into
ICE and then right into Substitute, and then transitions into AAA.]

[After AAA...]
[Loud Cheering]

Roger: "Thank-you! *Boston*!" [more cheering and some Pete noodling on
guitar]

Pete: (to someone in the crowd ;-) "Fuck off." [some more cheering and
noodling and then the Synth. launch into WAY]

[After WAY......cheering, whistling...]

Roger: "Thank you."
[long moment of cheering and Pete tuning and noodling]
Pete: [random guitar chords] "This is a song called (stops and addresses
Roger?) I've seen the folks. I'm still (?) now. (addressing fans) And thank
you for the little *gift* you've sent. She sent me a little gift. And now
she's hiding behind the guy in front here. Hello sweeeeeetheart.
Anyway, this is a song from, ummmm, John Entwistle, called Another Tricky
Day."

[launch into ATD]
[After ATD...cheering, more Pete tuning, checking of strings....then
silence......something inaudible and some random cheering, then.....]

Pete: (to an individual ;-) "You....wouldn't....know....heart.....if it came
and stuffed itself up your *fucking* ass. [crowd cheers] WITH CUSTAD, you
wouldn't know it.
Anyway, *heart* is not a word we use in The Who. *Heart*, hard, do you want
it hard? Yeah, real fucking sex symbols up here. [loud cheering] I don't
know what band you think you're following, but sometimes I think you've got
the wrong one. But, you're always there! And it leads to some
interesting...exchanges. [chuckle from Rog].
This is a song I wrong for the....collection of songs which *became* Who's
Next. It was the, fell off the end. Came out a bit late. It's called Relay!
"

Roger: "1,2,3"
Pete: [while playing opening chords] "It's about communication!"
Roger: "4."

[Into Relay]
[After Relay.... LOUD cheering....tiny pause.....then right into Bargain.]

[After Bargain...loud cheering as synth. fades out....

Roger: (to crowd) "(chuckling) Woho, you're sounding great!"

[Synth launch into Baba O.]
Roger: "The (?) is in ya!"

[After Baba O....LOUD CHEERING, then some "Who-who-who", while Pete noodles,
then chords.....]

Pete: "When a.......when I was growing up, a, Roger and I were talking
yesterday about growing up in the neighborhood we grew up in,...and the times
we spent together, and the times we spent together with John, and the times we
spent together with the various other....*hoods*. Suds and Yorbo's
that...that occupied the neighborhood. And it's, a, extraordinary for me
still that the, that those guys, allot of them who are dead, allot of them who
are fucked up, and allot of them, who, a, didn't have the kind of good luck
Roger and I had......to be musicians, and, and to be able to perform.
Um....these guys were the inspirations to a piece I wrote called
*Quadrophenia* [cheers from crows]. And, a, You know, sometimes for allot
of people, a,..... the only time they actually face, a *true* spiritual moment
in their life is when they're at the end of whatever journey it is. That's
basically what Quadrophenia is all about. We're going to play a couple songs
from Quadrophenia. Thank you."

[Launch into Sea and Sand, then right into 5:15, followed by Love Reign O'er
Me]
[After Love Reign O'er Me.....loud cheering and audible hoots........

Roger: (somberly) "Thank you."

Pete: "So that was just three song from Quadrophenia. I think we played it in
it's entirety here once. We did. We did. And, a, it was really cool to play
the whole thing. You kind of end up with a, a picture of a kid on a rock.
And, a,........kind of where we ended up. [more guitar noodling] OK!
(barely audible) Fuck off."

[launch into Eminence Front]

[After Eminence Front.....LOUD cheering....settles to applause....Pete chord,
and then right into BBE...]
[After BBE....cheering....]

Roger: "Thank you."

[launch into YBYB]

[After YBYB....loud cheering.....]

Roger: "You......betta."

Pete: (noodling) "When, um,......when we, when we came out, the uh,.....we're
not doing requests so shut you're fucking mouth. [HUGE cheer from crowd]
Um,....It's another friend of mine. I only swear at people I love. So fuck
off all of ya. [more big cheers and applause]. When we, uh, ....when we came
out on the tour the uh, um, oh for fucks sake be quiet I'm trying to
concentrate. Ya know? He's got his ear plugs in there. He can't even
fuckin' hear my reply. When we pull his, we got this, um.., ultra violet
light. And you know these little yellow things that people put in their ears,
we *see* them all over the place. People try to preserve their hearing,
*IT'S...TOO....*LATE* !!!!! [LOUD cheer] It's always too late! You know
there's nearly as (?), this is a song that I wrote when I was 19, and , um,
it's kind of changed a bit as we've dragged it along through the tour.
(something yelled inaudible from fan) And, um,......... before, before,...why
do you have to speak. Why couldn't you just keep your fucking mouth shut.
[loud cheers......Roger, irritated with fan, walks to sit on Drum Riser....]
The a,.... John Entwistle wrote some writing....which will be of tremendous
interest to you in your study house, in the break. And, a, some *really*
lovely autobiographical writing about Woodstock and about the early years. He
only did a couple of chapters, but we're hoping we might get to put it out one
day. And this song, which is, a, called The Kids Are Alright. [loud cheers]
Has become a kind of [Pete noodling] story about where we came from, where we
grew up and all that kind of stuff. And I don't want to sound like Bruce
Springstein, it's not....what we do. But this song,....not that there's
anything wrong with that. You know I love him, love him. And um,.......If
you say get on with it, I'll fucking walk off." [Roger storms back to stage
front.....to address fan]
Roger: (visually and audibly pissed) "Why don't *you* get on with it and
fucking *shut up*. [Pete noodling] For one minute. Puffer (?)."
Pete: "What I want is a flame thrower. CHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH (makes sound of
flame thrower). [cheering, laughing, my friend Jess not believing it's the
same guy we gave a ride to the show to. :) Iwogima! General McCarthy!
Anyways. This is it. It goes back a long way. And it's changed over the
years.

[launch into TKAA, then right into MG followed right behind by WGFA.]
[After WGFA....]

Roger: "Thank You."
[Loud cheering]

Pete: "Are you really 33? You're six, you're six. Yea? Seven? Five! Love
the age you're (?) Well that shut you up!

[cheering......cheering increases as John video begins.....chants of "who,
who, who".]
[cheering]
[LOUD Cheering as band re-enteres.....Pete chord......more "who, who, who"
chants....more Pete chords....]

[launch into PW, then right into Amazing Journey/Sparks, followed by See Me,
Feel Me.]
[After SM,FM.......HUGE CHEERING]
Pete: "JOHN RABBIT BUNDRICK FROM TEXAS ON THE ORGAN. PINO PALLADINO ON THE
BASS. MY BROTHER SIMON TOWNSEND. ZAK STARKEY ON THE DRUMS. Thank you so much
for making this such a great gig for us."

Roger: "Thank you. Thank you very, very much. You be lucky!"
