More on child porn
Back again. Are any of you guys really interested in child porn and
pedophilia? Since I've been sucked into it, I've decided I should check out
what's going on. I've finished my research paper today, and I've got some
interesting references (see below). I'm also going to be getting a list of
organizations together to complain to--I don't especially like what's going
on. If no one else is interested, then say so, and I'll go off and write
letters by myself.
As it turns out, the World Health Organization defines pedophilia as a
preference for pre-pubescent children. It seems to be UNESCO and Innocence
in Danger, a UN initiative, that extends this definition to include all
MINOR children, which includes maybe up to 21, depending on the laws in
whichever country. They also state (without supporting research) that there
is a direct link between between what they call paedo-criminality and child
porn and child prostitution. As expected, they also say that they mean to
use supply and demand principles to fight child porn. These seem to be the
organizations that are driving the fight we're seeing against child porn.
As you might guess from earlier essays on the matter, I think they're making
several mistakes.
1) Defining all child porn/pedophilia to be the same offense, regardless of
whether the "child" is one or seventeen.
2) Defining all types of child porn as the same, whether it's hard or
soft-core, rape or not.
3) Equating use of child porn with pedophilia.
4) Thinking they can control the demand for adolescent porn (and thus the
supply) by putting all the users in jail.
5) Thinking they can stop child molestation by controlling porn.
6) Wasting manpower on the above when they should be concentrating on
suppliers and manufacturers.
7) Framing laws that make looking illegal, thus preventing concerned
citizens from searching out and reporting child porn operations.
8) Framing laws that make substitute products (computer generated hard core
porn) illegal, when this would provide direct competition to suppliers.
9) Insisting that nothing can be done to block child porn sites when the US
has passed a law that seems to block casino sites. (What's the difference?)
As it turns out, the Texas gateway site was not discovered by law
enforcement. It was reported by a concerned citizen who found it while
surfing. Apparently he had to really insist to get something done about it.
