The death of Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees (#5) spurred
more search activity than any rock and roll passing
The Lycos 50 has tracked, with the single exception of
George Harrison. It ranks higher than the deaths of
Joe Strummer of The Clash (number 33 three weeks ago),
Joey Ramone of The Ramones (number 14 in April 2001),
John Entwistle of The Who (number 19 in July 2002) and
Layne Staley of Alice in Chains (number 23 in April
2002). Gibb's passing also generated 50 times as many
Bee Gees searches as usual, including searches for
Maurice himself along with brothers Andy, Robin, and
Barry. In fact, Maurice Gibb and the Bee Gees got five
times as many searches as Pete Townsend and The Who
this week -- despite the controversy swirling around
Townsend's alleged interest in child pornography.
