Problem here is that Leno is the only one making such jokes about Pete.  When he makes jokes about an individual, the perception is that there must be some truth to the joke, or it wouldn't be funny.  Most who hear the jokes are not famil;iar with the actual facts, and when they laugh they show their belief in at least the partial truth of the joke.  It is wrong for Jay to use Pete's situation for cheap laughs when the real truth has yet to be established.
