Irony, Crusade, Too close to the Heat...
I know that Pete is innocent, and I feel very bad for
him and his family for having to go through this ordeal.
I know he'll get through it.
I do, however see a great deal of irony about all of this
with respect to recent and not-so-recent Who/Pete activities. I'm
going to focus only on activities where money was raised to prevent/treat
"child abuse". Of course there are others (Live Aid, Ox Fam,
Teenage Cancer Trust, Concert for New York. This list continues to grow).
- Pete and The Who produce and perform Tommy (you know what this is all
about now, but it's real meaning about child abuse and what it
all means is just sinking in)
- Pete develops the idea of Lifehouse (about technology greasing the
skids for subverting society at an almost geometric rate via
a world-wide network called the grid)
- Secret Policemen's Ball (Pete performs for Amnesty International charity
which is against thuggery, often disguised as Law and Order)
- Bridge School benefit (The Who perform to benefit this institution
that aids victims of child abuse)
- Maryville Academy (Pete and The Who perform several times to raise
money for this institution that aids child abuse victims)
These are all well and good, but not close enough to the heat to get burnt
- Pete writes and produces Psychoderelict (about how the press can
destroy a persons reputation through misinformation)*
- Pete begins his autobiography including research into child abuse (while
researching this topic he stumbles onto hard core sites that
feature child pornography. Initally appalled by how freely he
has gained access to this site from his home computer, the same
computer his family uses, he decides to investigate.)**
- Pete writes "A Different Bomb" essay, and a follow-up post to his
web site "A Different Bomb: Revisited". Which goes further into
the source of the problem - the production, commerce and
distribution of child pornography. In this second post he talks
about the current police action against viewers of child pornography
as a "Witch Hunt".***
* Pete can likely become one of the wealthiest men in the UK after suing
all of the tabloids that tried to assassinate his reputation. I think
with the tide turning, they are starting to realize their exposure.
** Pete is always looking for new ground to break, and how he can make a
positive difference in the world. This has been the consistent
theme throughout his life. From what I can tell, even with his
fuck ups, he has done way more good than bad, and never intentionally
tried to hurt anyone (Abby Hoffman may have a different view of this).
*** This is where Pete got too close to the flame. I'm sure that his
"Witch Hunt" comments did not go over well with Law enforcement,
and big business. Some believe that in the West, he latter actually
control the former. His essay points to the failings of law
enforcement, and to the indifference of big business (banks, telecomms,
internet service providers).
This is the loudest power chord Pete has ever played.
