On earlier dates, the outspoken singer has been airing his
convictions on US foreign policy and the recent trial-by-media of his
friend Pete Townshend. This show's political subtext boiled down to
the Bush mask and a T-shirt slogan: "No War, No Way", which he
flashed to a roar of affirmation during Don't Go.

Just seven shows into their Riot Act world tour, the band's execution
wasn't without stumbles.

Their policy of rewriting the set list each night, potentially
drawing on seven albums and innumerable rarities, lent a trouser-seat
dimension to Tremor Christ, Get Right and the climactic
Rearviewmirror.

The gung-ho garage band attitude, however, only heightened
excitement, nudged to the limit by Vedder's breathtaking singing and
often pushed over the top by Mike McCready's lead guitar heroics -
far too loud, as all self-respecting guitar gods should be.

If any fault could be found with this exhilarating performance, it
may have been the band's insistence on as many album tracks as hits.
Better Man, Given To Fly, Even Flow, Jeremy, Evolution and their
remake of '50s smoocher Last Kiss were Pearl Jam's only concessions
to the casual fan.

Then again, after two hours with these guys, there were precious few
of those in the building.

Pearl Jam play their final Melbourne show at the Rod Laver Arena
tonight
