Vedder sings anti-war tune

Eddie Vedder has brought an anti-war message to
Australia.

The Pearl Jam frontman donned a George W Bush mask as
the pioneers of grunge rock opened their latest world
tour in Brisbane.

Vedder appeared on stage last night dressed as the US
President in a silver cabaret jacket and his
opposition to the looming war with Iraq was a
recurring theme of the band's first Australian gig in
five years.

Pearl Jam concert favourite Daughter caught the
anti-war bug with Vedder finishing off the song with a
version of Bruce Springsteen's War.

"War - it's good for absolutely nothing," Vedder told
the capacity 10,000-strong audience at the Brisbane
Entertainment Centre.

Vedder also spoke out on behalf of The Who's legendary
guitarist and songwriter Pete Townshend, who was
arrested in London recently for downloading child
pornography from an internet website.

He said Townshend had been merely researching a
project on child abuse and that he had been unfairly
treated in the media.

Pearl Jam in a tribute to Townshend played their own
frenetic version of the early Who classic The Kids Are
Alright...
