Scott Halpin & Me: Answer to Schrade

Answer to Scott Schrade: Scott Halpin NEVER asked The Who or its organization for any money to perform at The Cow Palace. In fact, he had to sign a release to have the video bit of him performing in The Who's "30 Years of Maximum Rhythm and Blues." The only thing Halpin got out of that was one of the first boxed sets off the line. Halpin does have a complete video tape of the Cow Palace show, but he does not show it to anyone because, once again, he does not want to flaunt it. (Also, he does not want it to fall into the hands of any bootleggers. He protects it like it's the serum that'll cure AIDS.) The video tape, as I stated in my original "Halpin and me" piece was shot by Bill Graham and the Cow Palace people for "insurance purposes" and Scott was lucky enough to get a copy of that show. The video bit you see in "30YOFMR&B" is from that same video tape.

The next year, 1974, Halpin was invited backstage by The Who during the Winterland concerts in San Francisco where Scott finally met Moon. Scott went to the concert and wandered around until someone from The Who's organization recognized him and invited him backstage. He met Moon who was at his Monty Python best, Scott told me.

Halpin also told me other stories about the Cow Palace gig. He said, for example, that Moon's drums were huge. His tom-toms were as big as the bass drum that Scott was using at the time he played drums. When Bill Graham put him behind Moon's kit, Pete turned around and did not know that Halpin had been dragooned into playing for Keith. When Pete realized what was happening, he asked Scott if he knew basic blues beats and Scott told him, "Yes," and Pete told him to, "Watch me." Pete counted off and started riffing, if memory serves me correctly, to "Smokestack Lightning," Scott said he was physically exhausted after the first song because Pete and Ox were so fast in their playing styles and Scott had a difficult time trying to keep up with them. He also felt that Roger was a bit pissed that Scott was there and Scott felt that Roger was doing things to provoke him to fuck up on the drums. Scott wasn't specific, but he made this comment nonetheless. (This feeling didn't carry over when
the two met last year in Chicago...)

After the concert concluded, all four left the stage and Pete was in a rage about the tattered performance and Keith's conduct. Pete wasn't angry at Scott, but Scott saw Pete in all in glory as far as anger was concerned. This was during the Quad tour with all the problems with the tapes and performance problems (rememeber Pete pulling Bob Pridden over the sound board in Canada??) and the Cow Palace gig was one link in the long chain of fucked up concerts that drove Pete...and Roger...mad. Scott saw some of that and his descriptions of Townshownian fury are remarkable to listen to.

I could write more...but my first appointment is here and my secretary is beating me over the head with the case file. Believe it or not, my client is charged with downloading kiddie porn on the computer. Being a criminal defense attorney has its burdens....

Now...where have we heard that before???

My best to you, Scott, and I like your web postings. And love to all posters on this website.

True, you can't restore the missing flesh, but there are procedures to
work with the remaining skin to restore a natural, permanent, and
continuous protection for the glans. The increase in sensitivity is
reportedly remarkable. For comparison of the difference, imagine your
formerly-normal upper lip being stitched to the underside of your nose,
so it is permanently exposed to air and never moistened by saliva. Now
imagine the sensitivity you could expect from it after a decade or six
in that position.

Also, smegma does not form if basic washing is observed. That's part
of the instruction manual. And the crap about circumcised penii being
less susceptible to cancer is crap.

Sorry for the off topicity, but there is apparently a serious lack of
knowledge out there.

Cheers,

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has any MP3's of synth tracks of WHO songs like
Baba O'Riley, 905, or any other WHO song. We're trying to cover some WHO
songs with my own band, but what I always found annoying by other band, was
the crappy keyboard synth sound of the synth tracks. I know I once had a
MP3 of the Baba O'Riley synth, but I lost it. :-(
So I'm looking for the originals, *or* ones that come damn close to it. :-)

Thanks!

Yeah, thanks, Joe. So, I take it the outlandish rumor about Scott asking
The Who for money for his time on stage with them is completely false then?

Me neither. ;-( It's been playing for about a month or two in other
parts of the country, & a friend in my area told me he saw it the other
day. So, it's only a matter of time, I guess.

I notice Claritin went from The Who's "Overture" to the B-52's "Roam."
They must've purchased the rights to a handful of songs.

Hendrix, Allman, King Ranked as Top Guitarists
Mon Aug 25, 2:19 PM ET Add Entertainment - Reuters to My Yahoo!

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Late rock musicians Jimi Hendrix (news) and
Duane Allman (news) lead the list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all
time in the upcoming issue of Rolling Stone magazine.

Hendrix, who invariably tops such polls, received a glowing tribute from
Who guitarist Pete Townshend (news), who wrote that he "made the
electric guitar beautiful."

Townshend recalled that one of Hendrix's shows was "so profoundly
powerful" that he found himself holding hands with fellow devotee and
guitarist Eric Clapton (news).

Allman was hailed by the magazine for transforming "the poetry of
jamming" with the Allman Brothers Band, the Atlanta rock group he
founded with younger brother Gregg in 1969.

B.B. King, who turns 78 next month, came in at No. 3. "His
string-bending and vibrato made his famous guitar, Lucille, weep like a
woman," the magazine said.

Clapton landed at No. 4, followed by Delta bluesman Robert Johnson.
Rounding out the top 10 were Chuck Berry (news), Stevie Ray Vaughan, Ry
Cooder (news), Jimmy Page (news) and Keith Richards (news).

The survey is featured in the next issue, which hits streets on Friday.

The No. 100 spot went to Kim Thayil of defunct Seattle rock band
Soundgarden. Townshend himself was No. 50. Two women made the list: Joni
Mitchell (news) at No. 72 and Joan Jett (news) at No. 87.

Stax session guitarist Steve Cropper, who was judged the No. 2 guitarist
in a Mojo magazine survey in 1996, was good enough for only No. 36 in
Rolling Stone's estimation. Two spots behind him was Fleetwood Mac's
Peter Green (news), who had been No. 3 on the Mojo list.

Rolling Stone should come up with a list of rock magazines that used to
be relevant & entertaining years ago but have been sucking splotchy ass
since the 1980s.

Bullshit! :-)
I've read a number of different reports from patients who received circumcisions in their adulthood due to various factors (all ending in one hell of a painful procedure) and they claim that the sensitivity is the same.
Hell, if true, it's a damn good thing that I *am* cut (whoops, the cat's out of the bag...so to speak) 'cause I'm too damn sensitive as it is! Someone make the wind stop blowing!

I've never seen it, but my wife is convinced there was a Sprite commercial a few years back featuring LROM from Quad.
Can anyone confirm this????

Also, it struck me last night while watching the start of CSI Miami, that The Who dominates TV.
No other band is presented on a regular basis at the start of two major prime time TV shows like The Who.
Also, no other band is presented in as many commercials as The Who.

Whether this is a good or bad thing is a matter of opinion, I'd imagine.

Silence Day

For the followers of the Indian Master Meher Baba today is an important day - it is the anniversary of the beginning in 1925 of the Avatar's life of complete silence. Silence is what I would like for a while - but it seems impossible.
I don't want to pick a fight with any British newspaper, but some of them are starting to make things up. This year has been a tough one for me, but contrary to what one British tabloid wrote yesterday, I am not depressed, my neighbours are not abusing me - far from it, they go out of their way to show me warmth and understanding - and I have not received death threats. I have a driver who acts as a kind of bodyguard and I have a night security man - but I always have. No change there.
I walk freely in my town, I eat in local restaurants and everyone is very good to me. I take what happened to me very seriously indeed, and I hate the idea that anyone might believe my intentions were criminal, but I do believe great good has come out of it all.
One message I want to send. I know I am not above the law, but the law on the access of indecent images on the internet was changed in this country AFTER I did my research. While doing research I knew the law. I was not breaking it. I'm not stating this to make an excuse. But surely anyone can see if that is a fact, and it is, why would I be ashamed of the subsequent due process of law acting against me?
But I am deeply sorry for the trouble and pain I've caused: even the investigating officer (in Texas) who first found my name on a porn site database was a Who fan, and was saddened.
But I am not sad. I am out of the war against child-porn, but the war continues and that is what matters.
I'm happy, strong, sober, humbled and for the rest of the day I'll try to stay silent.

NEVER-BEFORE SEEN PICS OF STARS

By Fiona Cummins, Ms Showbiz

HE watched The Who's Keith Moon smash down a door with a fire axe.

And he heard George Harrison's startling dressing-room performance of the
Beatles classic I Feel Fine.

Now photographer Brian Bignell has revealed his astonishing private collection
of some of the giants of 1960s rock and pop. His pictures - until recently
gathering dust in the loft of his home in Burnham, Essex - give a fascinating
insight into what went on behind the scenes when the top bands took to the
road. Brian says: "Everyone was really friendly. It wasn't like celebrities
today, who are surrounded by minders and travel on luxury tour coaches."

He rubbed shoulders with the Hollies, the Small Faces and the Rolling Stones.
But Beatle George's impromptu performance in 1963 is one of his favourite
memories.

"He was just fooling around, but it was electrifying," he says. "The hairs
stood up on the back of my neck."

Keith Moon's special brand of mayhem also impressed Brian. He says: "Keith
came downstairs with a towel round him, but his dressing-room was locked. He
disappeared for a few moments and then came back wielding a fire axe and took
it to the door."

Now Brian, 57, plans a book of his pictures as a reminder of an amazing era.

I wasn't knocking Plant's voice aside from his whiney sort of "Fool in

he lost as a young man (while Roger was still improving) was that POWER
he used to have before, say Zep 4. There's no way he could belt out
"siiii-iiiince I been lovin' you babe..." now. Hell he couldn't do it
by the time Houses of the Holy came out too. It's as if he blew out a
vocal chord or two by that time.

>I also am not wild about the way he is singing some of the songs these

Okay, so it's not me alone who's noticed that too. I'm not a vocalist,
so I don't know for sure, but I think of his vocal approach now is like
a stage singer in a Broadway musical. He's taken some of the grungy
snarl out of his delivery and put a polish on it that sometimes hints at
"Oklahoma" or "South Pacific". But you're right too - Roger is still
the man...
