Re: free speech

It stands for it more now than ever. NEWSFLASH!... Eddie got to say what he wanted! People may have walked out and others may boycott or criticize, but where is this great government conspiracy against free speech you keep alluding to? The problems that the Dixie Chicks are experiencing come from the American PUBLIC being opposed to what the lead singer said, NOT the government.
Are you sure the American public is all that opposed? Are the Chicks really experiencing problems?

Their new album was released in the middle of the uproar, and it sold pretty briskly. Presumably this means the fans weren't offended by the Bush comment, leaving the question as to why there was such an uproar. It has been suggested by some in the media that the fuss was generated by Clear Channel at the request of the Bush administration.

This is another illustration as to why deregulation of the radio industry hasn't worked out as well as planned. Most folks complain about the near monopoly where Clear Channel can demand payoffs to play a particular band's music, but it also appears that they may be willing to blacklist particular artists when given the proper incentive.

Would you think it's an infringement on free speech if the government engages in covert activities to silence particular artists?
