ROCK'S BIGGEST VILLAINS
By BILL HOFFMANN
September 11, 2002 --

THE psycho who killed John Lennon topped the list of
rock's "most dastardly villains" by Blender magazine.

Few would disagree that pudgy Mark David Chapman
deserves the No. 1 spot for blowing away the beloved
Beatle in 1980 - but he's got plenty of company, says
the mag's October issue.

At No. 2 is Ike Turner, the coke-snorting soul man
notorious for beating his ex-wife Tina Turner.

Next are the Hell's Angels, who killed a fan at the
infamous 1969 Rolling Stones show in Altamont.

The Rev. Marvin Gaye takes the No. 4 position for
silencing one of soul's most magnificent voices - that
of his own son Marvin Gaye, whom he shot dead in an
argument.

Cocaine - infamous for all of the rockers it helped
kill over the years, John Entwistle and Shannon Hoon
to name just two - came in at No. 5.

Another winner is Tipper Gore, who grabs No. 7 for
spearheading the Parent's Music Resource Group to
pressure the music industry to stop selling records
with "pornographic" lyrics.

Earning a slot at No. 22 is Simon Cowell, the
mean-spirited "American Idol" judge who dismissed
hopefuls as "pathetic."

And the No. 25 bad guy: R. Kelly, whom the magazine
dubs "Jerry Lee Lewis with a camcorder."
