While I agree that the CDs don't bring the other two members enough money, wouldn't you also say that part of John's problem is that he is an extravagant spender?
If I understood Pete correctly, it's owning all the property that's extravagant. It takes upkeep to retain property values, including taxes. I read this morning that property values in the UK have increased by 18 percent recently (a trend in the US, too). Many retirees find they can't afford their homes any longer because they can't pay the taxes on their retirement income. John is a retiree in the UK.

I notice Kenney Jones was selling his property last year.
