Although the percentage of "hits" is increasing with improved technology, they too have to make up expenses for a large number of "dry holes" from the ones that DO produce. (In the late '60s, the proportion was about 1 profitable well, 1 break-even, and 8 total losses for every 10 drilled.)

In both cases, a hit, when it happens, is SO big that it can carry the company itself plus a large number of failed attempts.
