Familiar 'Voices'

March 15, 2002

BY MARY HOULIHAN STAFF REPORTER

British playwright Joe Penhall says his 1994 drama
"Some Voices" was an attempt to rewrite Sam Sheperd's
sibling-rivalry drama "True West."...

...After all the awards for "Blue/Orange," Penhall
says his "young playwright days" are probably over.
The accolades and the success of both plays have moved
him into "legitimate, grown-up playwright" status. But
that doesn't mean he can't broaden his horizons. He is
at work on several screenplays, as well as "noodling
around" with Peter Townsend on a script for his rock
opera "Quadrophrenia," a venture he calls "wild and
pretty unbelievable."
