Pete Townshend - "Scoop," "Another Scoop," "Scoop 3" -
who but the completists has bothered to buy all the
detritus Townshend has released, particularly since
the later installments were largely devoid of Who
material?

Perhaps realizing his folly (or just looking to make a
buck), the Hall of Famer has distilled the multivolume
compendium of demos to its essentials, via a two-disc
set appropriately titled "Scooped." Wise about its
solo selections (the scratchy "Tough Boys," later
"Rough Boys," is a fine example) and heavy on the good
stuff - a stark "Behind Blue Eyes," a tender "So Sad
About Us," solid takes on "Substitute" and "Bargain"
that prove all Daltrey, Entwistle and Moon had to do
was embellish their parts - this is all the excess
Pete anyone needs.
