SO JOHN Entwistle, The Whos bass player, apparently
died with a stripper in his arms. The rock legend
lives on. How cheering this news seems to have been to
many, many ageing (and a couple of not so ageing)
Lotharios, their dormant fantasies about sex and drugs
and rock n roll reawakened by a veteran of the old
school.

Although there was no evidence of drugs, or excessive
drinking, Entwistle did allegedly receive the
attentions of an "adult entertainer" at his Las Vegas
hotel room the night of his heart attack, thus evoking
memories of the late Hank Williams, a blonde and a
bottle of bourbon.

Men past 50 have been sidling up to each other in
offices and pubs ever since, slyly admiring the
audacity of a man who takes this exit (as if it were
planned) with gasps of "what a way to go" envy.

While deploring these pathetic creatures prurience, I
have to confess that I find Entwistles final act of
debauchery an almost refreshing contrast to the antics
of Sir Paul McCartney (veggie burgers and white
weddings), Sir Elton John (currently playing great
auntie to Liz Hurley) and Sir Cliff Richard (anyone
for tennis?). It restores ones faith in rock music as
a subversive medium.
