I thought that was a SPIN editorial lits, and not a popular poll taken.
There is no way the Ramones would out-poll the Stones or Zeppelin if that is
the truth. I thought a bunch of SPIN writers got together and created the
list on certain criteria. I may be wrong. In any event- how can the Who not
be in the top 10, just for their contributions to live music. They were the
first band to get really rowdy on stage- making them at the time the best
live band on earth (still are). All the wacky shit bands do on stage now is
an extension of Pete's windmills and jumps, Roger's swinging the mike, and
the destruction of instruments. Before that, the wildest thing anyone ever
did was Elvis swiveling his hips. For God's sake, Hendrix is best known for
humping his guitar and ramming it into the amp and lighting the guitar on
fire at Monterey pop. Where on earth did he get that idea from, i wonder?
Robert Plant's entire stage personna was inspired by Roger Daltrey, as well.
How about Tommy being a major force in so many musical arenas? Tommy
inspired that Meatloaf rock opera, and Pink Floyd, and all the "concept"
albums that came after. The Who has to be top 10, at least. What did the
Beastie Boys ever influence? You gotta fight for your right to party? Worst
song EVER!
