Someone, buy Pete a round.

Hello Who Fans: I heard a portion of something on the radio yesterday
which mentioned a Pete Townshend interview in which Pete mentioned that
he has not had a drink since 1982. Hmmm-let's see, when was the last
Who album? I know from both personal experience and the experience of
many others, that drinking, as well as using other recreational substances
can produce tremendous highs, as well as tremendous lows.
People who go 'clean and sober' will tell you they don't have the highs
they once did, but of course they don't have the lows that follow. I
know a lot of writers and creative people in general strive in a stressfull
environment of large swings in their personal life to create
their best work, or sometimes to create at all. I know it's not as if Pete
has done nothing in the past 20 years-a few solo projects, some
theater, certainly nothing that in my opinion matches the quality or
quantity of his '65-'75 period of absolute greatness. Now, of course,
I would never intentionaly promote the virtues of alcohol in a public
forum such as this, but-is there anyone out there that thinks that Pete's
sobriety is, at least partly, responsible for the lack of a Who
album in the past 20 (yes-count 'em) years. Has Pete himself ever hinted at
this-to anyone's knowledge. If so, for God's sake, someone
buy that man a round. Regards, Alan W. Jankowski.
