Re: Pete with Who exclusively
Keets, I wasn't implying that Pete should forget his solo projects. I
didn't even imply it. My comment was in regard to him NOT working with the
Who ever again. I mean let's face it, Psycho D and White City, etc are
very good, but don't hold a candle to Tommy and Quad. Pete's best rock
music has come through the Who, and I think he acknowledges that now, which
is one of the reasons his performances this year have been so inspired.
That's my only point.
The same mind is at work. If Pete had done TOMMY and QUAD as solo albums,
they'd be very similar to PSYCHODERELICT and WHITE CITY, that is,
introspective modernist works with a twist of irony. The Who has always
translated what Pete wrote into "rock" music for the stadium crowd.
It is interesting that Pete seems so inspired this year, but I don't think
it's because he's suddenly discovered the commercial and/or artistic value
of The Who. He's known that for some time. It's a change in perspective
that we're seeing. What he seemed to be saying in his diary was that he's
felt pushed into working with The Who, but given the choice this year, he
made a free decision to go on with the tour, and that's changed how he feels
about performing.
