From what the tiredest fans are saying, it was the Righa Royal. I haven't
seen any mention of Pete and Roger, though. They may have been staying
somewhere else. Watch for Scott Smith in NYC. O&S typically does some
research in attempting to locate the band.
I don't think Scott (or anybody else on O&S) does any research in trying to find the band- not on the list publicly, anyway. From what I've seen, it's "discussed" by various people in two or three-person conversations, but there has been a surprising lack of discretion from listers over the past week in disclosing where they have seen band members after and before shows. I've actually been pretty surprised by it, but then again, the whole singalong with Rabbit kind of made it a true public-knowledge thing anyway, so....

So since it's out there, yes, some people in the band do stay at Rhiga, although you can bet that Pete and Roger stay elsewhere. If the Who do come back to a string of NYC shows, I wouldn't be surprised if they chose a different hotel. After it was made known that members of the band liked to go to the Irish Pub, they started going somewhere else...sometimes they like to hang out with the fans, but sometimes they also like to just get a quiet drink with each other.
Only Zak, Rabbit, John and some (most?) of the crew stayed at the Rhiga. John was always at the Irish pub, which was wierdly enough, never really crowded. If you talk about "they", I guess you are referring to Zak, Rabbit and John. They where the only ones coming out there.
Last time at MSG (2001) the VIP backstage section was overcrowded with people, no beer, no nuts, no celebrities. A lot of O&S-ers (Dave van S., Jason, Rich, and many more). Afterwards we went to the Irish pub where John was at. Only a few people present. Amazing! John also goes to the Irish Pub when he's in NYC with the JEB.
I never really saw Pete or Roger "hang out" with fans, not even backstage (where not much fans are found).

I wonder if they really have a quiet drink with each other. I think if they have, it _must_ be quiet. :-)

I once walked up to the receptionist at the Plaza a day after the last MSG show of 2001 and asked him if Pete Townshend was in. I was just asking if he was still in the hotel, so I could wait outside for him to come out. The guy picked up the phone and called his room! So I told him: "NOOOOOO!!!!!! I just would like to know if he's in!" I didn't want Pete on the phone! Didn't want to upset him, and didn't know what I'd say to him!
So the guy checked and said; "Oh, actually, he already checked out today." (did he even know who Pete Townshend was??)
::sigh::
