I don't know where Mighty Max was on record as thinking Moon was awful. In
his book, The Big Beat, he interviews a lot of famous drummers, from Hal
Blaine to Dave Clark to DJ Fontana to Charlie Watts, Ringo and Kenney Jones.
In the Kenney Jones interview, he refers to "the late great Keith Moon" and
his questions to Jones about Moon seem very respectful. In his interview of
Watts, Weinberg points out that he will never be able to interview Moon, so
he asks Watts to talk a bit about him. Watt's says, among other things,
"I'll tell you what Keith Moon is - Keith Moon is what legends are made of."
That quote not only got in the long paragraph of text about Moon, it is in
the margin of the same page as a stand-alone quote. I'm not sure that
Weinberg would have spent that much space on someone he thought was "awful."
Just a thought. But the book DOES admit Max was most influenced by Ringo,
like most people of his age. By the way, the book is probably lurking in
cutout bins somewhere and is a good read. Regards, Jay
