It is true that rap/hip-hop is huge with the HS crowd, but Dave Mathews is
also absolutely enormous with kids I teach. His voice annoys me so I can't
get into it, but he is a mega-star. The big classic rock support from high
schoolers comes from, I think, the lack of a real voice for "Their
generation." I think many identify with the shere emotion and intensity and
tremendous musical talent which characterized the 60s and early 70s- many
bands who were great but didn't cave in to commercialism and remained
committed to pure music. We don't really see that today as "bad boy" Snoop
Dog is doing mainstream commercials and guest spots on sit-coms. Mr.
"cop-killer," Ice T, is playing a cop on TV (not that I condone his lyrics,
but i wouldn't censor him). Too many of today's music stars are sell-outs
and "no-talents."
