I was playing drums recently on "open-mic" night and after playing
flawlessly
another guy who had drummed earlier in the evening, and who no doubt was
jealous of my talent, said, "you use too much arm and shoulder when you
drum"
to that dickhead I said "hey, look at Kieth Moon, he used alot of arm and
shoulder, too and he was the greatest drummer ever." I bet Kieth had to
listen to a lot of flak like that as well. By the way the recent book by
Fletcher states Kieth was born in 1946, however he dosen't back it up with
any evidence such as viewing the birth certificate. Other sources say Kieth
was 31 when he died, meaning he would have been born in 1947. I know it is a
trivial point - but who is right? I'd like to know.

Probably not:-) Blame it on the Who's well known inability to remember
anything factual:-) ("YBYB, our last hit in 1979" comes to mind)

I thought I'd posted this to O&S when I got the magazine a month ago,
but obviously not.

The only way to know what nights are booked is to contact the Albert
Hall direct. Frankly, considering that the dates are only 11 weeks away,
the lack of any press announcement and ticket sales is of more interest.

My guess is that if the shows go ahead, then the Who will do one or two
nights. Whatever else happens, I doubt the Who will do five nights.

Cheers,

John

Yeah, really. As usual, it sounds like anyone interested in going would
have to make arrangements at the last minute. For anyone in the U.S., it's
a long way to go.

The release date of Pete's La Jolla shows on CD will now be Friday 23rd

The shows, which took place in June of this year, were recorded at La Jolla

and the intimate atmosphere led to a 'Storytellers' type of show. As well as
the different set lists both nights also provide some unique dialogue.

progression, if not a plot, and you could hit the high spots on stage.
Party, fight with mom and dad, party, vomit at work, party, fight on the
beach, party, have sex, party, take train to Brighton, crash, rebirth.
How's that?"

If that happens, I may switch over to the Mark Leaman camp of 'OH NO! Don't
do that to my Quad!'

This is a huge whole in the movie. All plot, no depth. Robbed of the inner
turmoil in Jimmy's head, it becomes just a nostalgia piece. I hope the
stage version can avoid this fate.

I'm listening to a relatively new Radiohead song called "Pop is Dead". I
think it is a B-side on one of their recent singles. I'm not sure, as I
downloaded an MP3. Great tune.

The lyrics sound very "Long Live Rock" to me. Biting references to old
popsters are pretty cool. Here are the lyrics

WELL, this is what most of the Beatles bashing posts

embarrassing to see otherwise good folks wearing their

And as for Ringo - Billy Cobham, Miles Davis, Bob

gushed in print about the subtle genius and (here's
that word) innovation in Ringo's work.

I once heard a guy (I think it was a drummer from a
famous hard rock band, but I'm not sure) saying that
Ringo was the first true rock drummer (because before
the Beatles era most rock drummers played much more
like R&B drummers). That's not totally true (in fact
there were a few guys before him that did what
nowadays is common in rock drumming, as the drummer
from The Ventures), but this show that he did had his
importance. If we listen carefully to the Beatles
material, there are some really interesting drum
lines. In fact Ringo did some experimentations that.

It's really not fair to compare rock and jazz
musicians. If we do that, even John Entwistle would be underrated...

also, since it seems you're talkin about ringo here, I noticed that ringo
has
been using some elbow moves while drumming these days (saw him at jones

thought you might wanna know that keith hasn't been the only one. and hey,

Subject: Bjorn in the USA (yay! yay! yay!) - Mohegan Sun review

Hi all,

Of all the trips I ever made to see The Who or the JEB, THIS WAS THE
BEST!!! (and I've seen some spectaculair shows, if some remember my
previous reviews)

Jeff House arranged a date for me with a friend of his. She was going to be
my date for the Mohegan Sun Casino show. But we got along so great even
before we even met in person, she picked me up from Logan airport and had
been together ever since. Literally, the longest time we spent apart
must've been 15 minutes all during my stay in the USA. She took away the
breath I was keeping for sunrise...

On with the show... Jeff House drove me & Courtney (that's her name) from
Boston to the Mohegan Sun Casino. Arriving there at a motel we where all
staying, we bumped into my friends Terry and Cynthia! By total coincidence
almost *ALL* the who-fans where staying in the same motel that night! I'm
bad at some names, but the McMullans where there and Alan McK too! Amazing
coincidence. AND GUESS WHAT! They went to the show too! WAAAH!! :-)

We queued up in the casino. This was like a big amusement park with
electronic wolves. The JEB was playing in this giant tipi in the center of
the casino. I was lucky, I got a good seat on the floor, though it was on
the far left though (John had his ass in front of my most of the time, but
I was very close to the stage anyway). Supposedly the front section was
reserved for the Mohegan natives (and high rollers I presume). I'm not a
high roller, I'm a rock and roller! :-)

Steve spotted me and shouted "BA-DA-BJORN!" (running joke between the JEB
and me). Nice to be acknowledged. :-) Mark (the roadie) taped a setlist to
the floor, so I went up and read it... HOLY F*CKING SHIT! They where gonna
open with MY GENERATION! And end up with LONG LIVE ROCK! And somewhere in
between my favourite song LOVE IS A HEART ATTACK! WOAH!

Suddenly I realized how unromantic it is to take your date to a JEB show,
with songs about how evil women are, prostitutes and what a pain love can
be... Oh well... The irony. :-)

Songs that stood out that night for me where Sparks (some older who fans
bursted out crying, and I turned silent as well...). Sparks was so amazing
that night. John mentioned that he did a soundcheck earlier that day
somewhere else (MSG ofcourse) and Godfrey said: "Yeah, FOXWOODS!" (the
competing casino).
Love is a heart attack was amazing too. As always... During the "Death is
nature's way, of telling you to stop"-part Godfrey strummed his guitar in a
reggea-rythm. Very strange, but it sounded perfect. Again they went into
"Eminence Front". I heard later that John actually wrote the guitar part
for that song, showed it to Pete, Pete took it over and wrote the song.
John remained uncredited. So that's why he put it in that song "Love is a
heart attack" (how appropriate and scary if you think about it).

Godfrey made this comment to me about me coming all the way from
Switzerland... No; Norway... Sweden? :-)
Some guy in a sloppy shirt walked up to the stage and stood in front of
John all by himself. Steve pointed him out and said: "Hey, you didn't have
to dress up for this show!". :-)

"The Real Me" really rocked. My girlfriend really liked that one. That
*and* "Trick of the Light" (was I alright?). :-)
Boris the Spider was very good. I like the creepy part that they inserted.
I think it came from a classical piece, but dunno what exactly (can someone
help me out there?).
They ended up with Godfrey playing the national anthem. All the people
rised, took off their hats, etc.. I got chills there as well... I felt more
American then I actually am... By that time most people had walked up to
the stage. Right after that Steve shouted out "LONG LIVE THE USA! LONG LIVE
ROOOOOOCK!!!". And they bursted out in a glorious version of "Long Live
Rock".

After the show the band came out and I got to talk to them and hang out
with them for a bit (which is always much fun). And got my picture taken
with me, my girlfriend and John...

BTW; John looked very well. Very clear... Very healthy. He was at the best
I have ever seen him. *SOBER*. :-)

More to follow later (JEB @ BB King's - feat. Magik Billy!)... BTW; I'm
selling out; anyone interested in WHO vinyl check out a .zip file with
scans of what I'm selling at:

(the money is going to a roundtrip Boston for Christmas)

Well I wasn't comparing them, I was just saying that yeah, I can
easily see Buddy Rich as being innovative. Maybe its just that I can
only look at the Ruttles^H^H^H^H^H^H^HBeatles in retrospect that I
can't see what's innovative about Ringo. Famous? Yeah. Made a big
splash? Yeah. Innovative? Err.. sorry.

When I think of innovative rock drummers I think of Moonie, Neal Pert,
even John Bonham, but never Ringo. Sorry.

What Englishboy wrote above is completely accurate. And Sroundtable, you're

Oooo, I don't know about that. Remember, it's just my HO, but I see it as
Ringo launching the genre, and Keith just taking it and running with it like
no other drummer before or since.
To me, Ringo opened the door of funny, wacky, mad-cap, zaney, flashy,
personality and drumming. Keith just took it to the extreme. I say "just"
as if I'm belittling his accomplishments. Nothing could be further from the
truth.

  Just gotta share.......
Sitting out on my now plexi-glass insulated screened porch this past Sunday
with our friends from down the road, having returned from the annual
"Huntington Hunter's Breakfast" (It's hunting season don't cha know, and the
local Baptist church kicks out the most killer breakfasts for hunters and
others who just like to eat good grub).
The female from this couple, Julia, is the bassist for a very good local
band called Zola Turn (sister is lead guitar and singer/songwriter).
So, were chattin' it up, and Julia suddenly turns to me (like, 'holy shit, I
forgot to ask you this!!') and asks if I saw the Concert for NY on VH1 last
month (Julia's been out of town recording a new CD)(oh yeah, and she knows
I'm a Who Nut).
My reply was, "are you fucking kidding me?? Of Course I saw it."
She began to rave about The Who. Statements like, "they clearly stole the
show", and "I wanted them to keep playing" just about had me out of my seat
hugging her. Further statements of "man, that was one of the most emotional
sets I've ever seen" had me confirming my feelings and looking at my wife
like "see, see, it's not just me". Questions like "who was that drumming?"
had me going into the history of the last tour, which she missed!!!!
When they left (hey, much winter preps to get finished before the snows
return), they left with BIG smiles and my copy of IOW and a 2000 tour show.
Can't wait to hear their review.

If interested, below is the link to Zola Turn's web site.
This band really rocks. Highly recommend their last CD "Ninja Jane".

 http://www.zolaturn.com/

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that the wife and I caught CAKE in Montreal last
Sunday. As expected, a great show despite the mostly French speaking crowds
repeated statement of "Sheeps" for plural Sheep ("Sheep-s go to heaven,
Goats go to hell"). The singer even stopped the singing to say "It's Sheep,
not Sheeps by the way".
Pretty funny.

Anyway.

Stay in Tune,

*SOBER*. :-)

I have to lean a little more towards Keets on this one. You are both right,
but she's a little more on, and I'll tell you why... I think her
description of holding the drumstick (not like Henry the VIII) is a little
ambiguous - instead of referring to it like holding a "pencil", try
imagining the grip like holding a fork with Emily Post hanging over your
shoulder. Right handed or left handed only matters on the drummer itself,
not the technique. However, the proper ettiquette involved in holding a
fork (stuff of which I've only heard of as I eat with my hands, feet and
mouth) is the same way "traditional" drummers used to hold their drumsticks.
YOU are right when you say it's like a hitter's stance in baseball, but that
only applies to recent history. Keets is right because she referred to
Ringo's use of a fisted (heh-heh) grip. Before Ringo, Keith, and the
"modern" musicians, music teachers absolutely would not have let a pupil
hold the sticks, strum the guitar, play the piano in any other way than the
"proper" way. Along came those damn rebel rockers of the 60s and unorthodox
was IN. Remember too, that in the 60s, people who were left-handed like
myself were forced to become right handed in schools. That same mentality -
especially in ultra conservative England in the early 60s - had to apply in
music schools too. Do you remember Jimmy's father in the film version of
"Quad" when the Who were on Ready Steady Go? Remember what he said to Jimmy
about Pete? "Is that how you play a guitar now?" I'm sure classic music
teachers of the era might have said the same thing about Ringo's technique.
When Keith came along, I'm sure they all quit anyway.

I like your batter's analogy, but I don't think it applies until much later
on in the timeline. Before Ringo - YOU MUST HOLD THE STICKS CORRECTLY OR
DIE. After Ringo (and Keith, et al) as long as you can keep a beat, you can
hold the sticks up your ass if you'd like. See the difference? See that
awesome mental picture I just painted!?! How do you play the ride cymbal
with the stick poking out of your rectum? Sorry, I've lost my train of
thought now...

Anyway, another question: There was mention of Keith's Pics of Lily drums
the other day. Some day (Santa says if I'm good) I'm going to have a custom
made set of drums and I want to have a complete replica of Keith's Lily
drums. Does anyone on the list know where I might get this done? I could
go into Skizzie's Music store and order them, but something tells me I might
have to contact the manufacturer. Keith's POL drums were Premier I think
but I don't care who makes them as long as they can do it. Any ideas....?

Peace off Wholigans!

Listen to the first real R&B /rock / jazz drummer: Ginger Baker. Early
60th: Blues Incorporated an Graham Bond Organisation.Maybe Keith learned
something from him. Let's stop this rubbish about Ringo: just listen to his
son.

Well, a lot of it is jealousy because of the Beatles' unwavering popularity.
But I think the majority of people on this list recognize & respect the
talent
of the Beatles.
