re-The Who digest #301

Jon in LA writes that in his opinion The Who should have packed it in in
1978. Not gone on without Keith etc........Trouble is, in 1978, The Who
were one of the biggest bands in the world. It was a harddecision but
they made the best one to carry on. It may have been for business reasons
ormoney but the remaining three members were entitled to do so and IMHO
justified aftersuch a long career and one that they had all worked so
hard to build thru sheer hard work. Please remember that for much of their
creative and successful years, they did not earn thefinancial rewards that
was surely due to them due to the split years before with Shel Talmy,So
carrying on without Keith would surely continue the band's success and
earn them thekind of money they should have made for their talents. Of
course the ensuing problems withthe next couple albums,.Pete's hearing
loss, and 'that 1989 tour' ,Roger's lack of faith inKenney,etc...all
proved to be detrimental to their continued career. Though there were
somehighpoints,The Quadrophenia film being one,and the single YBYB giving
The Who a #2 hitin the UK and a lot of popularity worldwide. (of
course,Pete broke up the band too!)However after all this, look at the
renewed excitement of the 2000 tour, as The Who provedonce again just how
good they are! And the recent MSG show just adds to the evidence. And you
wanted these guys to pack it in ?Regards,Derick.
