Hmmm, *I* don't actually see a meltdown. I think your average fan and
critic would see it differently. Things definitely changed, but then again,
so did we. To me it seems so hard to do an even/across the board/time
comparison of music. What may have "sucked" at one time, because it just
didn't fit into what people wanted/liked, would have been great in the past,
or will be great in the future. I don't think the quality of The Who melted
down. I'm of the obvious minority that actually likes IH and can deal
relatively well with FD. Now, are those albums still considered rock????
If not, then yeah, there was a "rock melt down". But didn't we the fans,
and not necessarily us listers, have a rock-melt-down first??? While I'm
not saying Pete was listening to what the public at large wanted, he
definitely was influenced by other bands at the time that indeed may have
been.
Regarding rekindling of fire.......I don't see that. I call it "gettin'
back to basics".

I tend to agree with this, although I did like Captain Fantastic. After
that, I lost total interest.

Sensitive yes, but not to the point of taking away the BBS.
"Comments" are one thing, and other things are other things (as Yogi Berra
sp? would say).

>however innocent the intent

Hmmmmmm, not to continue to stir this whole black episode, but I don't know
how innocent the intent was. Not the way I'd characterize some of the
ugliness I read back then. I mean the BBS became a friggin war zone at the
end. While I contribute much of that to the over reaction of some lesser
seasoned list/BBS users, still..............

Sometimes aggression is just that.

The person who's ego is so large that they feel they must be heard and
responded to.
I don't think Pete could ever be accused of ignoring his fans. I'm thinking
of his Web site, the MP3's, his written diaries, his video diaries, his
"latest news" section, his propensity to respond to written mail. Without
knowing, I can't imagine that Pete ignored the whole thing. I believe he
probably responded in a way that was not satisfactory to the respond-e.
