Santana influence ???

Sitting here listening to Santana Live at the Fillmore '68, and did a double
take at the beginning of track 2 - Persuasion.
The beginning sounds eerily similar to John's bass playing on early beachy
songs.
I know these groups both played together at many venues during this time
(Tanglewood, etc.).  Just got to wonder who was influencing whom.
Ahhhh, those were the days.
Where's that damn time capsule when you need it???
I want to go!
