Nigel Becomes Plain Kennedy

Violin king Nigel Kennedy has dropped the Nigel from his name. The move
emerged as the star, now plain Kennedy, was crowned Male Artist of the Year
at the Classical Brits.

Despite using the ceremony to officially adopt his new stage name, he
confessed he had been left unimpressed by the ceremony.

Mr Kennedy, 45, who was nominated for two awards at the Classical Brit
Awards, said: "Why do there have to be separate pop and classical Brit
awards? Good music should be kept together."

He compared the awards to those in America, where the Grammy awards cover
all types of music, both classical and pop."

He added: "The people looking after classical music are not blameless. Too
many are devious and inept. If they were as caring as professional musicians
it wouldn't be so bad.

"I'd like to see musicians have a better moral conscience - give more back
to the people. A bridge with the public has to be made. The musicians I
admire are people who communicate - like Pete Townshend (of the Who) or
Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin)."

Punk-haired Aston Villa fan Kennedy shot to fame in 1989 when his album of
Vivaldi's Four Seasons went silver, selling 60,000 copies.
