Substitute - Tribute Album
Hello,
My wife and kids gave me the Who tribute album "Substitute" for
father's day. I have now had time to soak it in and can
comment on it objectively.
1. It is nice to have a Who tribute album. I will always listen to Who music.
2. Although Pearl Jam, Cheryl Crow, & David Bowie are the only big
names (besides Paul Weller), I have to say that musically the
songs are pretty powerful and representative. It would be nice
to see some really big names weigh in like they did on the "Two Rooms"
tribute to Elton John. The Who deserve it.
3. The packaging is slight, and that's my biggest problem. It should have
more
info about each band. Perhaps a picture and their comments about The Who.
4. The best track for me is "The Seeker". This version, while true to the
original recording is simply rocking.
5. The vocals on all the tracks are a constant reminder that Roger Daultry is
one of the best rock vocalists to ever grace the stage. I now appreciate
him more than ever.
6. I was expecting poor drumming, but was surprised on most tracks to hear
good solid performances that echoed Keith Moon. This speaks volumes
about his influence to today's drummers (Zak included).
7. The bass lines were solid too, but I felt they were a little slower and
simpler than John's performances (especially in the last ten years).
While time has affected Keith the most (he barely moves anymore),
then Roger (vocal range), then Pete (hearing, vocal range),
John seems to have improved over time. I now appreciate John more than
ever.
8. Lastly, I was disappointed by the number of tracks. The Who catalog of
hits is so vast that a double album is necessary to pay a proper
tribute.
